You, your kids, and the outdoors

For some the outdoors is a strange, scary, and uncomfortable place. But that’s not what the great outdoors is all about. There’s a lot of people who are starting to rediscover the fun of hiking, camping, cycling, and just going out and enjoying nature. Some people have never left the outdoors and they’ve actually managed to include their kids.

If you are an avid nature lover and you spend a lot of time on the trails or just being outside then it may be easier for you to raise kids who will also love the outdoors. But if you are not a big fan of the sun, wind, dirt, walking, and all that “nature” stuff then it may be more difficult for you to encourage your child to love the outdoors.

Lead by example

Kids will always emulate their parents so if you want them to spend time outdoors they need to see you outdoors too. It’s a time to spend time with your family and bond. Telling them to go outside and play while you stay inside on your phone, on the TV, or whatever gadget you have sends a conflicting message.

One step at a time

Take it one step at a time. Little victories are when your child has fun while you’re outside. Take these and think about how to build up these little wins for the next time.

Curiosity is good

If you give kids free reign outside they will get to places and find new things. Safety and security is very important but it’s also important to take off the training wheels and let them discover nature for their own.

Go outdoors

If you want them to love the outdoors then take them outdoors. Go for a walk or a hike if you are up for it. Look for trails around your area that you and your kids can do. Something that’ll work for all of you.

Prepare

If you ask hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts they’re usually eager to help you with this. They can help you with gear and supplies. They’ll also be able to help you with any possible activities you can do.

As soon as you’re done reading this take your kids and go for a walk. The great outdoors are waiting.
