Hiking basics: Lessons before you wander

You don’t have to be Bear Grylls to make your way into the great outdoors. All you need to do is have the will and a few lessons and gear. It also helps if you have a friend that can join you. Of course it’s not really as simple as all that. There’s a few things to learn and some gear to prepare. Here’s a few basics you need before you go on a big hike.

Learn how to navigate

Reading maps, reading a compass, and knowing where you are are important if you are going to go on a long hike. One of the biggest dangers hikers face is getting lost.

Hydration

Getting into a habit of regularly hydrating yourself is an important skill to pick up if you plan on going on long hikes.

Hiking Gear

You’ll need some hiking gear. A backpack, tent, sleeping bag, and some camping equipment. It’s a good idea to ask for help from more experienced hikers when you start prepping for your hike. Consider weatherproof gear if you know you might have to deal with rain. It’s important to have gear that will protect you from different types of weather.

Food

Learn about cooking on the trail. What type of food you should be bringing with you for meals and for snacks. Include cooking equipment you’ll need.

First Aid

First Aid skills are important if your going to go on a hike. Take lessons and make sure you pick out a First Aid kit for hiking.

Camping skills

If you are going on a long hike that means you’ll be camping. So learning how to pitch a tent, start a fire, and other camp skills are important.

Safety

Learn about how to keep yourself safe on the trail. How to deal with the wildlife, and the terrain. What to do in an emergency, and what to do when you need help.

Practice

If you’ve got all your gear practice at home. If you’ve got a backyard pitch your tent, cook your meal, and use your equipment. This will help you figure out how to use them.

Take these little tips in step and have a great hike ahead.
