They say that more and more people are entering adulthood with less basic skills. If you are going to be living on your own soon or know someone who will be than here’s a short list of some of the most important skills you need to cook for yourself and not starve or die from food poisoning.
1.Chopping and slicing
Most of the time you spend on cooking your meals will be in preparing the ingredients so you need to learn how to handle a knife. Youtube or maybe a local culinary class can help you with this.
Well we don’t really need to peel everything but you need to know how to peel fruit properly. You don’t need to know how to peel that super exotic and weird smelling fruit but at least know how to peel an apple yourself.
Knowing whether or not to peel or slice your veggies is going to save your meal. Which parts of the vegetable do you include in the dish and which ones you’ll want to leave out. Don’t forget to wash them first!
4.Cooking simple recipes.
We’re talking cooking rice, cooking pasta, boiling eggs, easy chicken recipes, and making a salad. If you can make these 4 dishes you should be able to live a little bit longer.
5.Using kitchen appliances.
You can’t cook everything in the microwave so you need to start learning to use all of the cooking equipment you have.
6.Cleaning up the kitchen.
After you cook and after you eat, its time to clean up. If you used any kitchen equipment its good to know how to clean them. A clean kitchen will also help keep the nasty bugs away.
This is as basic as it gets. Put water into a pot. Put the pot on the stove. Turn on the stove and wait for the water to boil. Easy peasy, now have some tea.
Not everyone’s strongest suit but when you cook you need to measure your ingredients. Use your measuring spoons and cups.
