In the last century, t-shirts have gone from primarily a generic underwear product to a prominent item in daily outerwear used to display the wearer’s interests. The modern function of the t-shirt across the globe has a wide variety of expressions. A few of these include: event advertisement, athletic team wear, politically minded information, motivational, comedy, family reunion fun, memorializing someone or something.
The process of custom silk screening may add to the price at local shops, but support local economies. Some online companies offer competitive prices, but order minimums may apply. Pay attention to the processing time for local shops and online companies to process your order. An approval process is sometimes used to ensure quality and may add to the time needed to complete your order. Processing times range from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.
A few examples of online agencies include CustomInk.com, BoltPrinting.com and Cafepress.com. These companies offer online design options and specialty styles and sizes. Online companies will often ship internationally.
Depending on the number of t-shirts desired, buying blank t-shirts and specialty paints is also an option. (Always follow the manufacture’s instructions.) This method is often considered a fun project for birthday parties and smaller events. Each person makes their own or makes one for a friend and everyone can trade!
Cotton is generally good for its durability and price. Look for pre-shrunk or be prepared that some shrinking may occur when buying cotton. If creating your own t-shirt, ensure that the shirt has been washed and dried first. Otherwise, the paints may deteriorate with the first washing if the shirt shrinks even the tiniest bit. Synthetics such as polyester blends, spandex, and nylon are nice for keeping cool, wicking moisture, and drying fast. Synthetics tend to be lighter in weight, but can easily be pricey.
A Few Sizing Issues
Men, women, and young adults often prefer a certain cut to their favorite t-shirts. Men tend to prefer a roomier shirt and may even cut the sleeves away. Women and young girls often prefer a fitted t-shirt that shapes to their form.
As common as the t-shirt is, tiny and tall people often have difficulty finding a comfortable t-shirt that also serves the function they seek. A 6’4″ man may not need the girth of an XL or XXL but if he does not want his t-shirt to be a halter top, he may have to choose one of those sizes anyway. He will likely find something to fit his needs at a big and tall shop, Kohl’s or JCPenny’s.
A pregnant woman
may not feel attractive in a size that is much larger than she is accustomed to wearing. She will likely not find many t-shirts on a normal clothing rack that are custom cut to the rounded shape that rapidly grows in the front of her form. She may be happier at a shop designed for maternity needs, i.e. Motherhood Maternity or even Old Navy.
