Food you should eat to stay healthy

You must have heard or read this somewhere ‘You are what you eat’. This is particularly true in as far as staying healthy goes. No one can stay healthy if they are constantly ingesting unhealthy food. The next big question then becomes, “What food should you eat to stay healthy?”

The secret to staying healthy is that first you should eat the right amount of food that is commensurate to your activity. If you are usually very active, it means you require more fuel for optimal performance. Secondly, your food should consist of a wide range of nutrients, otherwise commonly referred to as ‘balanced diet‘. The variety of foods in your die should include:

  • Carbohydrate and starch rich food which includes foods such as bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other wholegrain starchy foods which generate energy for the body.

  • Protein rich foods such as eggs, meat, fish, beans & the legume family as well as other non-dairy protein sources, responsible for body building and repair.

  • Plenty of vitamin rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, key in combating diseases and pathogens.

  • Milk and other dairy products – with particular attention to low fat content.

  • Well managed amounts of fat and sugar for energy and adding taste to food.

  • Plenty of water either directly or through fluids.

  • Mineral salts through salt and other food sources.

Since what you eat dictates your health, knowing the right food to eat may not suffice, you also need a proper guideline on how to maintain healthy eating. These guidelines entail:

  • Eating more starchy foods such as wholegrain breads, high ?ber cereals, especially porridge, potatoes, pasta and brown rice which satisfy hunger and fuel your body. They provide a slow release of energy. (Note that some types may contain more calories than others.)

  • Eat a variety of 5 or more of different colored fruits and green leafy green vegetables daily.Though smoothies can count towards your fruit and vegetable intake, restrict yourself to only fruit and/or vegetable based smoothies.

  • Eating a variety of fish is good for your health as a source of protein that also contains important vitamins and minerals. Eat oily fish such as mackerel, sardines and salmon at least once a week since they are high in omega 3 fats.

  • Prepare and cook your meals using fresh ingredients. Ready meals and take-always tend to be high in fat and salt and should not be eaten regularly.

  • Food stays healthier and beneficial to the body when it’s steamed, grilled, baked, roasted or stir-fried instead

of being deep fried. Avoid buying fried foods like chips.

  • Opt for vegetable oils that are high in monounsaturated fats or polyunsaturated fats such as rapeseed & olive oil, or sunflower & corn oil respectively.

  • Nicole – Juicing is a great way to go. I don’t have any food texture problems but I don’t like vegetables so I try to mix them with fruit and juice them. There’s a lot of recipes you can find and videos on youtube so you can learn to make different juice.

  • Trying to feed me and my son as many healthy foods as we can. This article is very informative as I will be more conscious now of what to and what not to take to have a balance diet.
