What if you were being interviewed for a job and you weren’t wearing pants? It may seem like you would never be caught in this situation, but believe me; it’s actually quite possible, and even tempting, during an online Skype interview.
In a Skype interview, you’ll be seated in the comfort of your own home, and the interviewer would only ever see your upper torso, so what’s the point in dressing up all the way? Well, at least that was my mind set. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that maybe wearing pants is actually a good precaution.
Whether you are about to go for an online interview or a face-to-face interview, complete proper attire is crucial for succeeding. In fact, according to a study by the University of Texas and the Sonoma State University, 37% of college job candidates were rejected solely for the way they were dressed.
How can you prepare the best attire to create the best first impression?
Dress formally. Avoid pieces of clothing that can be used casually, such as jeans, sweaters, skater skirts, and t-shirts. Take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, Could I wear this to a get-together with my friends? If the answer is yes, you’ll have to find something that is less casual, and more professional. Good pairings include blazers with pencil skirts or long-sleeve polo shirts with dress pants.
Jewelry and accessories should be used sparingly. Oftentimes, wearing too much jewelry can give an informal vibe to your interviewer. Accessories should only be used to complement your attire. Avoid showy or loud pieces of jewelry that might call attention to themselves instead of your achievements. Remember, you want the interviewer to focus on what you can do rather than what you have in your closet.
Conduct a mock interview with close friends. The best way to get constructive criticism and feedback is to call up a friend and ask their opinion. Make sure to ask an honest friend who isn’t afraid to criticize. Otherwise, they might tell you that you look fantastic, when really, your outfit could be better.
And lastly, don’t sweat it. Your attire should help you feel more confident rather than make you feel more stressed. You can do this!
