What to do when you run out of gas

Running out of gas is one of the worst things that can happen when you take a long trip. These situations can be scary and dangerous. But there are things you can do to get yourself out of this situation.

If you do run out of gas here’s a few things to remember to do so you can stay safe and get tanked up again.

The first thing you need to do is to make sure you are safe. Move to the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights. Reflector panels should be placed 10 or 15 feet behind your car. Use your smart phone to get in touch with your insurance company or AAA. If you have friends or family that are near or able to help you then give them a call. Let them know that you have lost gas.

Second, check your car for any damage. Look underneath if there is anything leaking. Look at the warning lights of your car. Take note if there are any warning lights flashing.

Third, Consider the weather and time of day. If you are in an unfamiliar location and you don’t know how far a gas station is then you may want to just stay in your car until help comes for you. If the place is familiar and a service station is easy to get to then head out but be careful.

You might want to use Lyft or Uber to get a ride to a gas station. Hitchhiking is the last resort. Be very careful if you do try to hitchhike. Trust your instincts and if you sense something might be wrong then its be better to be overly cautious.

We hope this doesn’t happen to you but if it does then we hope we were able to help you.

  • Hitchhiking receives a terrible reputation nowadays, but some of the greatest writers in modern history were once vagabonds (Jack Kerouac comes to mind). It’s definitely an experience that has only gotten worse as it ages.
